The ozone layer is a part of Earth’s atmosphere and is significant since it has the ability of protection against UV radiation which is just a small part of the sun’s radiation and also helps the heat balance. According to some sources it absorbs about 98% of UV light that has two types. One is the UVB and the other is UVA. UVA type is more dangerous since it causes deadly skin cancer, premature aging and melanoma. On the other hand, UVB also has a bad impact and effects on the skin that can cause serious damage. However, there is much to worry about since Earth’s lower atmosphere, can cause damage to the environment and also health problems in people such as respiratory or skin diseases. It can further damage DNA molecules in animals and plants. The ozone layer has the ability to control and prevent these so it has importance more than we can imagine…

Ozone layer depletion is a serious problem to be solved and precautions should be taken without any procrastination. Even though people know about the depletion of the ozone layer, unfortunately, the measures taken are not stringent and the risk still continues.

What can be done to prevent it from depleting?

People started to realize the thinning and depletion of the ozone layer is a negative thing so they started taking precautions in the 1970s.

Many governments and businesses, it was agreed that some chemicals such as aerosol cans, should be illegal. Thanks to the decisions and measures the ozone layer has shown slow recoveries. Yet, from time to time the depletion of the ozone layer has changed and still changes.

The ozone layer has a huge impact on human lives and should be prevented from depleting by taking long-term precautions. Being aware of the facts that cause the depletion is the first step. Here are some of the materials and aspects that cause depletion;

  • HCFC
  • Halons
  • Carbon tetrachloride

In order to start helping to prevent bad effects on the ozone layer from our homes, the first thing to look for is our fridges and air conditioners. Minimizing their usage and using them in the right way should be the number one priority. On the other hand, the carbon footprint is effective in the depletion of the ozone layer. In order to minimize that, ways to make energy usage balanced and productive should be found. Here are some of the steps that provide this opportunity;

  • Preferring to walk or ride bikes
  • Rather than using cars, using public transport
  • Using hybrid vehicles
  • Balancing the usage of energy
  • Providing energy efficiencies at homes
  • Using green energy
